We know that finding meaningful, engaging, and truly person-centred supports for participants can sometimes be challenging.
At Next Step Collective, we are proud to offer Equine Sessions that provide participants with a unique opportunity to build skills, confidence, emotional wellbeing, and independence through structured, ground-based interactions with horses.
Our sessions are designed around each participant's individual NDIS goals and provide a safe, supportive environment where participants can learn, grow, and connect in a way that often feels very different from traditional support settings.
How Equine Sessions Can Support Participants
Equine sessions can assist participants to develop and strengthen a wide range of skills, including:
• Emotional regulation and self-awareness
• Confidence and self-esteem
• Communication and social skills
• Building trust and positive relationships
• Following instructions and routines
• Problem-solving and decision-making
• Sensory regulation and calming strategies
• Gross motor skills, coordination, and balance
• Responsibility and independence
• Community participation and engagement
• Focus, concentration, and mindfulness
Many participants who find traditional support environments overwhelming, unengaging, or challenging often thrive in the calm and natural environment that horses provide.
Our Person-Centred Approach
At Next Step Collective, we believe the most effective supports begin with genuine connection.
Before commencing sessions, we take the time to get to know each participant, understand their goals, interests, strengths, support needs, communication style, and what motivates them. This allows us to tailor activities to the individual rather than delivering a one-size-fits-all experience.
Whether a participant is working towards increased confidence, emotional regulation, social connection, communication skills, independence, or simply trying something new, we ensure every session is purposeful, meaningful, and aligned with their goals.
What Does a Session Look Like?
Each session runs for approximately 45 minutes and is individually tailored to the participant.
Activities may include:
• Meeting and greeting the horse
• Learning safe horse handling skills
• Grooming and caring for the horse
• Calm breathing and mindfulness exercises alongside the horse
• Leading the horse through obstacle courses or trot poles
• Practising communication and leadership skills
• Goal-focused activities and challenges
• Reflection on achievements, emotions, and progress
Breathing and mindfulness exercises are an important component of many sessions. Participants are guided through simple techniques that help develop emotional regulation, body awareness, focus, and calming strategies that can be transferred into everyday life.
These exercises are particularly powerful when working alongside horses. Horses are naturally sensitive to human emotions, body language, tension, and breathing patterns. As participants learn to slow their breathing and regulate their emotions, horses often respond by becoming calmer and more relaxed themselves.
This creates an immediate and meaningful learning opportunity, helping participants recognise the connection between their emotions, physical responses, and the impact they have on those around them.
Why Horses?
Horses are highly intuitive animals that communicate primarily through body language and energy. They are incredibly aware of the emotional state of the people around them and can detect subtle changes in breathing patterns, heart rhythms, posture, and tension.
Research has shown that horses are capable of synchronising with human emotional states and responding to calm, regulated behaviour. This makes them exceptional partners in helping participants develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, confidence, and communication skills.
The relationship between horse and participant provides a unique form of feedback that is immediate, genuine, and non-judgemental. Participants often experience a sense of connection, achievement, and trust that can be difficult to replicate in other support environments.
For many participants, the horse becomes more than an activity—it becomes a partner in learning, growth, confidence building, and goal achievement.

We want families to feel supported, informed, and empowered. We want participants to feel seen for who they are — not just their diagnosis or support needs. We want to help people find the right supports, build meaningful connections, and create lives filled with opportunity, confidence, and belonging.
